A KINGFISHER ON A WINTER'S BEACH

Did you ever see a kingfisher on a winter's beach?

topaz and turquoise jewelled, poised by a rock pool

take my hand and see.

Did you see the dawn's soft honey mists

curling from the river, flowing, rippling by a thousand shades of green and bronze

take my hand in your warm hand and walk with me

Did you hear the ocean roar around the rocky houseless islands

where seals and glossy black sea birds with emerald eyes stare back at you

with trust

And twenty thousand prehistoric gannets wail at you and sail the airwaves

everywhere

Your mind swims in all the beauty and the wonder

The tapestry of gorgeous memories

of leaf and rock and sky and living things

take my hands in your warm hands

and share the loveliness of life and minds.
